Your personal sphere of influence:

The University of Vienna is offering a fully funded PhD position (4 years) within the realm of Digital Humanities. You will be working as part of the Digital Humanities (DH) group within University of Vienna’s Department of History, led by Prof. Dr Tara Andrews. Our research hinges on the use of digital tools and methods to support and advance historical research.
As a pre-doctoral University Assistant, you will work in a cutting-edge and dynamic environment, breaking new methodological ground for historical research. You will pursue an independent PhD project of your own design, in the realm of historical network analysis or deep learning. Your research gives you total freedom to follow your own interests within the field of Digital Humanities.

 

The employment duration is 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration.

Your future tasks:

  • Independent delivery of teaching offerings (1.5–3 SWS depending on salary grade)
  • Participation in research, teaching-related, and administrative tasks
  • Publication and presentation activities, both in Vienna and abroad
  • Contribution to organisation of conferences, meetings, and other external activities
  • Student support and supervision
  • Work on your dissertation and its completion

The conclusion of a dissertation agreement in the field of History, with a Digital Humanities focus, is expected within 12–18 months.

This is part of your personality:

  • Master’s degree in a field related to the study of History or the Middle Ages anywhere in the world, OR master’s degree in Digital Humanities with a focus on network analysis or deep learning
  • Experience with the collection and analysis of data for historical research
  • Experience with programming for the humanities (Python, R, JavaScript, etc.)
  • Intention to complete a Ph.D. project relevant to the field of Digital Humanities and within the supervision capabilities of the University Professor of Digital Humanities
  • Excellent spoken and written English skills (knowledge of German is also a significant advantage)
  • Ability and drive to work well both alone and with others
