Your personal sphere of influence:

As a University Assistant (Praedoc), you will work at the Institute of European Ethnology, which is very well-connected with universities and cultural institutions in Austria and internationally. You will collaborate with colleagues engaged in a wide range of research and academic teaching, contributing to a vibrant environment of research groups focusing on ethnography, materiality, urban/spatial studies, and multimodal/audiovisual research established at the institute. The topic of your doctoral thesis should fall within the scope of the “Studio audiovisual research”, whose work you will creatively contribute to shaping. https://euroethnologie.univie.ac.at/en/research/working-groups/studio-audio-visual-research/

The employment duration is 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration.

Your future tasks:

You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:

  • Participation in research, teaching and administration
  • Participation in research projects / research studies
  • Participation in publications / academic articles / presentations
  • We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months.
  • Participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
  • Supervision of students
  • Involvement in the organisation of meetings, conferences, symposiums
  • Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration

This is part of your personality:

  • Completed Master's degree or Diploma, in the field European Ethnology or a related empirical cultural studies discipline
  • Didactic competences / experience with e-learning
  • Professional competence in European Ethnology and multimodal, audio-visual research (practice of photo-/film and visual theory)
  • methodological competence in ethnographic multimodal, audio-/visual research (photo/film), methods of photo-/filmanalysis
  • Didactic competences / experience with e-learning
  • High ability to express yourself both orally and in writing
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English
  • IT user skills
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Desirable qualifications are - Teaching experience / experience of working with e-learning - Knowledge of university processes and structures - Experience abroad - Basic experience in research methods and academic writing - Good knowledge of French - basic knowledge of urban anthropology - experience in working with archival programmes for visual material - didactic knowledge in photo-/film practice or photo-/film theory
