In the project Queer Cinema Austria. Assembling LGBTIQ* viewing strategies of film, video and television production in Austria 1906-2022 (https://qca.univie.ac.at), a pre-doc position will be filled for 2 years from October 1, 2024 and will complete the project team (project leader Andrea B. Braidt, co-PI Nicole Kandioler-Biet; project post-doc Jul Tirler).

The project Queer Cinema Austria: Assembling LGBTIQ* viewing strategies of film, video and television production in Austria 1906-2022 (QCA) aims to create an overdue historiography of LGBTIQ* viewing strategies on film, video, TV productions from Austria. The methodological triangulation of historical research (new cinema history), cultural/queer theory and empirical research (individual interviews and group workshops) makes it possible both to compile different viewing strategies of LGBTIQ* audiences and to create a comprehensive corpus of all relevant works (filmography). The concept of "assemblage" is derived from an understanding of queer cinema (including video and TV) as a "queer-inflected medium" and not as a "neutral site of LGBTIQ* representations" (Schoonover/Galt 2016, 6; Puar 2017), thus overcoming a (purely) representation-critical approach. Instead, the dual qualitative empirical approach draws on a cultural analytical research design that analyzes reception strategies (including subtexting, reading against the grain, appropriation, and disidentification) to deepen our understanding of how viewing strategies function in relation to the (preliminary) corpus. Through this methodological triangulation between material historiography, cultural theory and empirical research, the project aims to capture Queer Cinema Austria from the perspective of the viewers - an approach that guarantees a high degree of innovation, an interdisciplinary perspective and a thorough validation of our findings.

The focus of our research: qualitative methods - semi-structured individual interviews - group workshops

Your future tasks:

• Scientific support support as well as organization and implementation of group workshops
• Conducting individual biographical interviews
• Coding the collected data

This is part of your personality:

• a degree in media studies and/or social sciences (with a focus on media)
• Experience with empirical research work (e.g. as part of your MA thesis), in particular with coding interviews and/or conducting, recording and evaluating group workshops
• Experience in academic work with queer theory, LGBTIQ* studies or gender media studies, feminist film and media studies
• Knowledge of empirical methods, source criticism, empirical research
