Your personal sphere of play:

As a university assistant (postdoc), you will contribute to strengthening research at the Chair of Ottoman and Turkish Studies at the department of Near Eastern Studies. Our research focuses on the history and culture of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey, extending into contemporary history.
The position is limited to a maximum duration of six years. The preferred starting date is October 1, 2025.

Your future tasks:

Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means:

  • You develop an independent research profile in the field of Ottoman Studies / Contemporary History of Turkey.
  • You are involved in research projects and scientific studies in the field of Ottoman Studies / Turkology.
  • You publish internationally and give academic lectures.
  • You apply for projects and raise third-party funds.
  • You prepare and complete a publication-ready habilitation.
  • You hold courses independently within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
  • You supervise your students at our department.
  • You participate in evaluation measures and in quality assurance.
  • You take on administrative tasks in research, teaching and administration.
  • You contribute to the development and further advancement of the journals published at the institute.

This is part of your personality: 

  • Completed doctoral/PhD studies in the field of Ottoman / Turkish Studies
  • Habilitation project in historical migration research focusing on Turkey
  • Research interests: migration history, minorities, spatial studies
  • Professional and methodological expertise in Ottoman/Turkish and European history, cultural theory, and digital humanities (DH)
  • Research competence and initiative proven through international publications in peer-relevant media
  • Experience with and/or willingness to acquire third-party funding
  • Didactic skills / experience in e-learning
  • Proficiency in digital tools and software applications (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS)
  • Excellent command of English, both written and spoken
  • Excellent command of Turkish and Ottoman Turkish
  • Very good knowledge of at least one additional regionally relevant language (e.g., Greek, Hebrew, Ladino)
  • Experience in organizing academic events and in “Third Mission” activities, i.e., the communication of historical knowledge to a broader public
  • Team player and high social/communicative skills
  • Desirable: teaching experience and/or e-learning experience; familiarity with university structures and procedures; international academic experience
