Your Personal Work Field: 

As an assistant to Univ-Prof. Assaf Pinkus, you will be part of his current project, Measuring the World: The Scaling Revolution, 1250–1400 (SCALER). This interdisciplinary research examines the artistic, technological, cultural, and ethical manipulation of relational sizing (scaling) that took place in the Latin West between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries.


SCALER explores the dynamic interplay between extreme miniaturization and colossalization in artworks, figures, objects, and architectural elements, as well as the medial shifts that characterized Late Gothic art. It investigates how scale became a defining factor in the formation of the modern self and examines the pivotal role artifacts played in shaping evolving relationships between God, humanity, and natural philosophy.


The Medieval Art team benefits from interdisciplinary exchange with colleagues in the Department specializing in Byzantine, Islamic, and East Asian art history, as well as with scholars in the Faculty of History and Cultural Studies. In addition to research, the position includes teaching responsibilities and active participation in the institute’s events and research forums.

Your tasks:

•    Involvement in research and coordination of activities in collaboration with Prof. Assaf Pinkus, with a current

     focus on the Global Art History of Giants.
•    Establishment of an independent research profile.
•    International publication and participation in academic

     conferences and lectures.
•    Development and submission of research proposals, including applications for third-party funding.
•    Independent teaching of university courses and supervision of students in seminars.
•    Active participation in all activities of the Chair of Art History of the Middle Ages, including research projects, conferences, and excursions.
•    Support the Chair of Medieval Art History in research, teaching, and administrative tasks.

Your Profile: 

•    An outstanding PhD dissertation in Medieval Art (Latin West), 12th to 15th centuries, with priority given to

     Gothic Art. No longer than 5 years since the approval of the PhD.
•    Language skills: Excellent proficiency in English and Italian; knowledge of German is desirable.
•    A record of international publications.
•    Proven teaching competence.
•    Strong teamwork and communication skills.
•    Excellent organizational abilities.
•    Experience with AI applications in research or teaching.

Fixed-term contract and fair salary: The basic salary of EUR 4,932,90 (14 times a year) increases if we can credit professional experience. The postdoc position is for 4 years with the option of an extention of max. 2 further years, depending on the research project, at the discretion of Univ..- Prof. Pinkus.
