Your personal sphere of play:

The Division of Microbial Ecology (DoME) at the Centre of Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science is a creative and ambitious team that conducts internationally leading research in the field of microbial ecology.
We are searching for a Postdoctoral Researcher with expertise in bioinformatic analyses relevant to the study of virus ecology and evolution.

Duration of employment: 3 years

Extent of Employment: 40 hours/week

Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Your future tasks:

As Postdoctoral Researcher, the candidate will contribute to human microbiome focused research at DoME. More specifically, the candidate will analyse the virome effects of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in a two-step process. First, we will analyse virome dynamics of publicly available sequencing data associated with FMT. Second, we will analyse an existing specimen collection of irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis patients to perform an in depth characterisation of the virome of the donor and the recipient before and after FMT. By combining these two approaches we aim to detect and quantify viruses and virus-like entities, link changes in the virome to disease, to eventually determine whether the virome allows for predictions for the clinical outcome of FMT. As the safety of FMT is an open discussion, we will also put a focus on the transmission of viruses that can potentially be harmful for the recipient.

The successful applicant will work in close collaboration with different research groups within the The Cluster of Excellence 'Microbiomes Drive Planetary Health' (https://cemess.univie.ac.at/research/coe-microbiomes-drive-planetary-health/).
