The Department of German at the University of Vienna is the largest academic center covering all fields relating to German language and German-language literatures. The core areas are Modern German Literature, Medieval German Language and Literature, Germanic Linguistics, German as a Foreign and Second Language, and German Teaching Methodology. In addition, the areas of Gender Studies, Cultural Studies, Literary Theory, and Literature for Children and Young Adults are well established. More than 6400 students are enrolled. 

Your personal sphere of play:

As a University Assistant (Post doc), you will work at one of the largest German Studies institutes in the world, within a motivating environment alongside colleagues committed to a broad spectrum of research and university teaching. 

 

The position is limited to the period of an employee´s leave, from 1 March 2025 to 30 June 2025.

Your future tasks:

You will actively contribute to research, teaching, and administration, which includes: 

  • Developing or further enhancing an independent research profile 
  • Participating in research projects and academic studies 
  • Engaging in international publishing and conference activities 
  • Applying for a securing third-party funding for projects
  • Preparing or completing a habilitation thesis 
  • Independently teaching courses as per the collective agreement 
  • Advising and supporting students 
  • Contributing to evaluation processes and quality assurance measures 
  • Assisting with research, teaching, and departmental administration

This is part of your personality: 

•    A doctoral degree/PhD in Modern German Literature or Comparative Literature (with a focus on German-language literature)
•    Expertise in German-language and European literary history
•    Methodological skills in textual analysis techniques 
•    Didactic skills and Proven Teaching Experience: 
•    Strong written and verbal communication skills 
•    Excellent proficiency in German and English, both written and spoken

•    IT skills 
•    Teamwork capabilities

Additionally expected: 

  • Teaching experience and familiarity with e-learning methods 
  • Experience participating in research projects
  • Publications in reputable, field-specific (peer-reviewed) journals, according to disciplinary standards 
  • Experience presenting at international conferences 

Desirable Qualifications: 

  • Familiarity with university structures and precedures 
  • International experience abroad 
  • Experience in student advising 
  • Research focus on modern literary and cultural history (18th-21st century), political theory, media history, or the history of science
