The Computational Drug Discovery and Design Group (COMP3D, https://comp3d.univie.ac.at/) at the Faculty of Life Sciences focuses on developing computer-based methods, particularly those involving machine learning and artificial intelligence, to predict the biological, medical, and toxicological properties of active substances. These innovative technologies enable the development of effective and safe drugs more quickly, efficiently, and sustainably.

Your personal sphere of play:

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will work on the development of cutting-edge methods in artificial intelligence and machine learning in the context of drug discovery. Not only will you become a key member of our international and interdisciplinary team, but also have the opportunity to train and take leadership responsibilities, and shape the present and future working environment and research topics of our group, together.

You will have flexible working hours and can work remotely at times, in consultation with your supervisor, Assoc.-Prof.Dr. Johannes Kirchmair. The position is available for immediate filling, also as a part-time position if desired. The position is initially limited to 3 years, after which it can be extended to 6 years.

Your future tasks:

  • You develop an independent research profile in artificial intelligence and machine learning, in the context of drug discovery.
  • You take a leading role in the research and management of the COMP3D group, including its high-performance compute resources.
  • You supervise the research conducted by master's and doctoral students.
  • You contribute to the Department's teaching activities.
  • You engage with colleagues from adjacent fields and collaborate on interdisciplinary research.
  • You publish internationally and give lectures.
  • You apply for projects and raise third-party funds.

This is part of your personality: 

  • Completed doctoral/PhD studies in Computer Science, Computational Science, Cheminformatics, Bioinformatics, Chemistry, or a related field, or you expect to complete them in the near future.
  • Established experience in modern machine learning and artificial intelligence.
  • Research competence and initiative proven through international publications in reputable conferences or journals.
  • Ideally, competency in chemistry, specifically pharmaceutical chemistry.
  • Excellent written and spoken English skills, demonstrated by high-quality academic writing and communication.
  • Experience in research management and supervision.
  • Strong social and communicative skills.
