Your future place is at the Department of Political Science in the research area of International Politics.


The Department of Political Science, a subunit of the Faculty of Social Sciences, addresses all major fields of political science. It is dedicated to innovative and problem-oriented research and provides students with a wide range of specialisations. Members of the Department study the transformation of governance, statehood and democracy across different policy areas, geographical regions and political areas.


In the research area of International Politics, you can expect a team of renowned and award-winning researchers. Our team offers you exciting research projects, collegial and interdisciplinary cooperation and exchange with a young and interested generation of students. Our research focuses on current geopolitical changes, international environmental, raw materials and climate policies, as well as politics and development models in Latin America. They are partly oriented towards the term "Imperial Mode of Living" and the research approach to "Historical Materialist Policy Analysis (HMPA)".

 

The position is to be filled from 1 January 2025, and is initially limited to 6 months. After this period, the position may be made permanent by mutual agreement.

Your future tasks:

 

The primary area of responsibility is participation in research, teaching and administration in the field of International Politics (led by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ulrich Brand) and the development of long-term research structures. In your research you will combine different research foci of the research area. Additionally, you will independently teach courses in the field of International Politics in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement. Responsibilities include organizational activities as well as academic self-administration tasks at department and faculty level and in teaching.

 

We expect:

  • Active participation in the consolidation of research on Latin American at the University of Vienna
  • Development and further consolidation of an independent research profile, including project application and acquisition of third-party funding, as well as participation in research projects
  • International publication and lecture activities
  • Collaboration in scientific networking with a special focus on Latin America
  • Participation in evaluation measures and quality assurance
  • Participation in the departmental administration
  • Independent teaching of courses to the extent of the collective agreement provisions (four, max. six semester hours per week) and participation in teaching administration
  • Student support
  • Knowledge of university processes and structures
  • Involvement in the third mission of the University of Vienna on the topic of Latin America

This is part of your personality:

 

  • Completed doctoral studies in Political Science
  • Very good knowledge in the fields of International Politics, Critical International Political Economy and Development Research with a focus on socio-economic development and populism in Latin America in the 21st century
  • Interest in state theory and transformations in the Global South in the light of recent transformations in the global world order
  • Interest in research on the concept of the "Imperial Mode of Living"
  • Good knowledge of qualitative methods of empirical social research
  • Proven ability to publish in renowned, relevant media
  • Extensive teaching and supervisory experience in Bachelor's and Master's degree programs
  • High level of written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent written and spoken German, English and Spanish skills
  • IT user skills
  • Ability to work in a team

What we offer:

 

Work-life balance: Home Office is temporarily possible upon agreement. The place of employment is Vienna.

Permanent contract and fair salary: The basic salary for this position is EUR 4,752.30 (14 x per year for Senior Scientist Postdoc), which increases if we can credit professional experience.
