In addition to providing a solid academic foundation, we place special emphasis on the personal development of our students. The Department of East Asian Studies offers degree programs such as Sinology (BA) and Sinophone Societies and Cultures (MA). These programs are supported by language instructors and scholars in the social sciences and humanities. A key component of these programs is instruction in modern Chinese.

The position is advertised as full-time, but part-time employment (20 hours/week) is also possible. Please indicate your preference in your application letter.

Your workplace:

As a Senior Lecturer, your primary responsibility will be teaching modern Chinese language. Our instruction focuses on the development of Chinese language proficiency from levels A1 to C1, in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The language instruction team currently consists of two Senior Lecturers as well as external instructors. What distinguishes us as a team is our shared teaching philosophy, active collaboration, and a constructive feedback culture. We place particular emphasis on flexibility, professional development, and the evidence-based advancement of teaching practices. A full-time position of 40 hours per week includes a teaching load averaging 17 semester hours per week in language instruction.

Your future tasks:

You actively participate in teaching, research & administration, which means:

•    You will independently conduct language courses at the bachelor’s and master’s level.
•    You will carry out administrative tasks related to teaching, including support in course planning and test administration.
•    You will coordinate a team of instructors (in particular external lecturers).
•    You will implement quality assurance measures in the area of teaching.
•    You will contribute to the ongoing development and standardization of the language proficiency program.
•    You will pursue further training in teaching methodology and actively engage in national and international networks in the field of Chinese language instruction.

 

What we expect:

•    Completed master’s or diploma degree in a field relevant to the teaching duties (e.g. Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, language pedagogy with a focus on Chinese, or another suitable discipline).
•    Native proficiency in Chinese.
•    Several years of independent teaching experience at a post-secondary institution outside the Chinese-speaking world.
•    Excellent knowledge of language teaching methodologies and a willingness to innovate.
•    Excellent written and spoken English skills (level C1) and good German skills (level B2) are desirable.
•    You are a team player with strong social and communication skills.
