The Department of Egyptology at the University of Vienna is an internationally renowned research and educational institution for questions of pharaonic culture and history. The three core areas of our department are archaeology and material culture, architecture and art, and language and literature.

Do you enjoy working with young people, are you curious and would you like to pass on your knowledge? As a Senior Lecturer, you will play a key role in the education of our students. In addition to providing in-depth specialist training, we are particularly keen to develop students' personal skills. We support students in developing a curious and problem-solving mindset, thus creating a solid foundation for the professional challenges of the next generation.

Your workplace:

The Senior Lecturer position is assigned to the Field of Egyptian Philology, whose research and teaching focus covers the entire history of the Pharaonic language and written culture as well as its media of communication. Your area of responsibility (including in the Introductory and Orientation Period StEOP) lies in the academic teaching of the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in Egyptology. Here you will be regularly entrusted a.o. with courses on the language stages Middle Egyptian, Late Egyptian and Coptic as well as the Middle Hieratic and Late Hieratic writing systems. You will also be regularly assigned to teach courses on Egyptian epigraphy, Egyptian literary history and the methodology and theory of philology and textual studies.

The employment level of 22.8 hours/week includes an average teaching commitment of 8 semester hours per week of academic teaching per semester.

Your future tasks:

You are actively involved in academic teaching, research and administration. In detail this means

  • You will independently teach courses in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes for an average of 8 semester hours per week
  • You make an active contribution to the (further) development of course and examination formats
  • The ongoing reception of the current state of research as well as further didactic training and the assumption of research tasks during the lecture-free period are expected.
  • In addition, the assumption of administrative activities, especially in the administration of teaching, is part of the job profile.

  • Completed doctorate in Egyptology with proven expertise in the field of Egyptian philology
  • Further research activities and publications on questions of Egyptian language and writing culture
  • Several years of independent and broad-based university teaching experience
  • Enthusiasm for passing on knowledge and for university teaching
  • Didactically competent handling of digital and hybrid teaching and learning environments including AI
  • Excellent German language skills (C1 level)
  • Proven ability to work in a team and inclusion skills
