The University of Vienna plans to expand the existing Research Data Management services by offering discipline-specific support through a new Data Stewardship program tailored to meet the discipline-specific needs. The Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science is therefore looking for a highly motivated person (m/f/d) with professional experience in data management and processing, quality control, data evaluation and analysis or related fields for the position of a Data Steward. The position is initially limited for a period of 1 years. The position may be extended on mutual agreement.

Your personal sphere of influence:

As a Data Steward at the Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science you will support the scientists in the sustainable handling of research data and the development of strategies for discipline-specific and cross-disciplinary research data management that complies with the FAIR principles. Together with the researchers at the Centre, as well as in exchange with experts from the research-supporting services of the University of Vienna, the Data Stewardship Coordinator of the and data stewards of other faculties, you will further develop Research Data Management within the Centre. You can expect a diverse and promising working environment. 

Your future tasks:

  • Focus in the first year: Implementation of an Electronic Lab Notebook, including the development of relevant training materials, templates, and a monitoring system.
  • Advisory activities and support for researchers in the field of research data management and open science, with a focus on biological (sequence data, microscopy) and chemical-analytical (mass spectrometry) data and data analysis.
  • Design and delivery of tailored training sessions on research data management and open science, particularly within the Vienna Doctoral School of Microbiology and Environmental Science and the Postdoc training at the Center.
  • Design of workflows for data exchange and storage of lab-based instruments, as well as their implementation in collaboration with the IT team.
  • Design and development of innovative discipline-specific services in research data management.
  • Integration with international platforms for the exchange and archiving of research data—awareness-building for sustainable research data management.
  • Development of processes, policies, and standards for research data management.
  • Support in creating data management plans for national (e.g., FWF Austrian Science Fund) and international research projects (e.g., EU Horizon 2020 Data Management).
  • Assistance with the documentation and archiving of research permits, such as those related to the Nagoya Protocol or sample import/export documents.
  • Conducting needs assessments among researchers at the center.
  • Networking within internal university, national, and international networks and initiatives.

This is part of your personality: 

  • A completed diploma or master's degree in one of the relevant fields or in data science.
  • Experience in research data management and open science.
  • Good knowledge of research practice, as well as a broad understanding of how research operates and how data and software underpin reproducible research
  • Experience with designing and delivering training
  • Very good command of written and spoken English
  • Very good command of written and spoken German or a willingness to acquire it
  • Willingness to undertake further training
  • Strong social and communication skills
  • Creativity and innovative spirit
  • High service orientation, ability to work under pressure and flexibility
  • Independent, accurate and systematic way of working
  • Strong ability to work in a team
