Your personal sphere of play:

Your future workplace is situated at the Faculty of Life Sciences at the Vienna Biology Building (UBB)/ Dr.Bohrgasse 9 where research groups work various areas of biology. Research in our workgroup “chronobiology” is driven by our motivation to dissect the function and impacts of biological oscillators from their biochemical underpinnings to their relevance in ecosystems. Thus, methodologically, we combine a broad range of techniques from molecular biology, biochemistry, various -omics to behavioral and physiological analyses.

This particular position will focus on understanding the extent and cell biological/ molecular mechanisms underlying rhythms and possible oscillators in deep sea animals in close interactions with our collaboration partners from the Human Frontiers Science Project “Temporal structures in complex deep-sea versus surface marine life: from molecules to communities”. In addition, the research will also involve work at the intersection on daily and monthly oscillators in the marine bristle worm Platynereis, aiming to bridge from molecular biology to ecology.

Your future tasks:

  • Plan and execute experiments on the chronobiology of deep sea animals (e.g. mussels) and the bristle worm Platynereis.
  • Plan and execute experiments on the chronobiology of other marine animals in the context of the lab’s collaborations
  • Manage collaborative projects within our research group and with our collaboration partners.
  • Plan, perform and analyze transcriptomic and possible other -omics data
  • Manage and develop research projects and publish acquired results.
  • Support for and independent grant applications on the topic
  • Teach Bsc and Msc students of biology in lectures and practical courses.
  • Supervise research projects of Msc and PhD students.

•   High interest for teaching the next generation of pharmacy students and scientists.

Education and training:

•   Completed doctoral/PhD studies in ecotoxicology, ecology or related areas
•   High competence and documented experience in chronobiology on marine animals.
•   Experience with research on deep sea organisms

•   Strong hands-on expertise in big data analyses, non-parametric and bayesian methods for rhythms analyses; panel models, penalized regression

•   Experience with R, Matlab, Sigmastat, Prism

•   Fluent in English (oral and writing)

Additional qualifications/previous experience beneficial for selection:

•   Experience in student teaching in chronobiology

•   Proficiency with technical equipment required in deep sea cruises
